Puppetry & Movement
A Community Workshop Initiative
When: Tuesday evenings · Starting May 19
Where: 101 Campbell Ave SW · Downtown Roanoke
The Puppetry & Movement Initiative is a hands-on workshop series running Monday evenings at Art Project Roanoke, led by artist and teacher Mike Moran. It's a creative cycle — drop in, explore puppetry, and decide how deep you want to go.
Those drawn further into the whimsy can design and construct their own puppets, learn to animate them, and — if the stage calls — perform alongside other participants and invited artists at a public showcase in June.
Three tracks, any entry point:
-
Two 2-hour sessions. Cut, build, light. Immediate results, no experience required. A perfect first step.
-
Build a performance-ready puppet using EVA foam and cloth. Two required sessions, one optional. Visual art meets physical performance.
-
Ongoing standalone sessions focused on presence, voice, character, and improvisation. For people who want to go deeper.
The Puppetry & Movement Slam: Summer Solstice Showcase on June 27 is a public performance event at 101 Campbell where participants share work they've made.
